The area we walked through yesterday and today, and will tomorrow, were on the frontlines during World War One. The line that Arras and Bapaume are on saw heavy fighting, especially towards the end in 1917 and 1918. There are many smaller war cemeteries in this area. This one contains the graves of 399 British, 14 Canadian, 2 New Zealand, 1 Indian and 4 German soldiers. It is sad to think about th Read on...
We are camped a good Glenn Maxwell throw from the current bank of the muddy khaki coloured Diamantina River as it slowly moves downstream to flow into Lake Eyre. A lone pelican drifting with the current greeted us as we began our walk to the causeway and onto the Bridge over the Diamantina River approximately 4kms away. Before we reached the road leading onto the causeway, we could see that traf Read on...
Later that eveningour first theatre show. The whole ship seemed a little subdued. We arrived only five minutes before the curtain raised and we were still spoilt for choice as to where to sit. What a difference a cruise makes. On our last trip, people were turning up an hour before the show to ensure they got a seat and now its a case of: Khor Fakkan – the city time forgotor at least the city C Read on...
When people think of the Second World War, most have images of Germany, France or Britain. Most people wanting to visit historical sites will go to the beaches or concentration camps which is understandable. I had four uncles who fought in WWII; two each from my mothers and fathers family. My maternal uncle, Harry, served in northern Italy. Uncle Harry was 23 years 19 days old when he died. A sn Read on...
It was dear Shell Greyhound (aka Michelle Edwards) who put the idea into my head. She missed my travel blogs this year and suggested I blog about my time in isolation. Hardly riveting reading, I thought at first. But then I mulled over it and decided it would be a fun thing to do and, if nothing else, it would give me some amusement during ISO_2.0. So, here goes. Living as we do in Melbourne, Ros Read on...
Bijlwerpen Read on...
I woke up to the sound of rain teeming down. My umbrella is in the car was my first thought- the car which was already shipped over to La Ceiba. Fortunately by the time I got up and had breakfast, the rain was already done. I sent a quick message to Sylvia and Cherry, making sure they were both up, then finished getting myself ready to go. I got Auri up to say a goodbye, then got a message from Ch Read on...
Between Boulia and Mt Isa there is 300km of single lane road, with very few overtaking opportunities. Travelling at speed it took about 4 ½ hrs stopping for a lunch break at the very small town ofDajarra – in fact, it is the only town in between and located roughly half way in the trip. The road was sealed all the way with wide gravel edges which were soft, but good enough to pull two wheels o Read on...
cheese and biscuits came in handy on the ferry from Algeciras to Ceuta. We were expected to buy lunch, but I didnt want to go down into the hole on that little bucketing ferry. I preferred the blasting wind on top, and picked my way through most of the cheese and half of the plain cookies. Later when I went down to avoid missing an opportunity, I was glad to only have twenty minutes remaining. It Read on...
Gosh, have we been so lucky on this holiday as except for the overcast days in Golden Bay it has virtually been sunny every day and we are now well into week 3 of the trip. You would think that with the sun shining the way it is outside that we would be up and about early and getting in a couple of planned forest walks. But with everything we wanted to do close by we indulged with a little bit m Read on...
