Greetings from the Samburu Game Reserve! We have had a fantastic first game drive. Our day started quite early. After a very nice breakfast in our hotel, we headed out at 7:30 for the long drive to the Samburu Game Reserve. We had a couple of stops, the first for a short break just outside Karatina for a bathroom break and shopping at the curio shop if we wanted, and a walk in the adjacent gardens Read on...
Today we visited the ancient city of Trier. This city was founded by the Romans and was already ancient during the Medieval era. The Romans built churches, bridges, along with a Colloseum and Baths. We started our day with a bus trip and drive around the city. Once we got to the town center, we began a 4 hour tour of the city.
We visited the only Protestant Church in the city, the Jewish Quarter, Read on...
Over the with my love for trains, metros, and public transportation, I have been fortunate to find some of the most beautiful stations in the world. Here are a few of my favorites (with help from tripsavvy): Komsomolskaya Station, Moscow (above) With its crystal chandeliers, marble pillars, and golden mosaics, youd almost expect to waltz through Komsomolskaya Station on their way to the platform. I have just learned of the untimely death of Mike Beal from cancer. Apparently, he died two or three years ago. He must have been no more than 65. Here are my memories of him.
Mike joined the staff of Old Swinford Hospital in 1976 to teach Science. His predecessor in the Science Department was Bob Boutland. It was my second year at OSH, and L.W. Sheppard to the end of his long reign. Mike was a b Read on...
Yesterday we had an adventure deep sea fishing on the Indian Ocean! It was a bit more than I expected in a lot of ways (the length of our boat trip, the swells on the ocean, and the disturbing nature of fishing itself).
Lets start at the beginning. We were up early as we were leaving at 7:30. It was raining when we got up, and while we were having our early light breakfast, but it soon stopped, a Read on...
It was an early start today. Our German cruise director is maniacal about punctuality. We headed out to Alkmaaar - a small town that was the center of the early Dutch cheese trade.
First though, a stop at several windmills a bit north of our destination. I was surprised to learn that about 70% of windmills in the Netherlands were used for pumping water to reclaim land (30% for grinding grain or a Read on...
We seem to have spent precious few hours on our now two month long jaunt doing much relaxing, so today we decide to make up for lost time. Our apartment is made for the job; a sizeable terrace equipped with a couple of large sunlounges overlooking the water, and if that gets a bit warm theres always the leather recliners in the living room where we can stretch out and stare through the full length Read on...
We left Sanford around 8.30am. One van (with a bike aboard) and three bikes running. This was going to be our last day on the bikes and our planned destination was Albany in New York State where Ronnies motorcycles will store our bikes. Around 208 miles expected today.
We had some navigation confusion early on, mainly around avoiding freeways or not. However we sorted out the route and with the e Read on...
