This blog is about empty roads in the corner of South Africa. Its a first for me, I had no idea how beautiful the Northern Cape is. We are right South of Namibia and by the Atlantic Coast.
We are starting in Upington. This is a cute little town...they even have direct flight to Joburg at least once a day! The little city is built on the Orange River. Surprise...they even produce some wine here. Read on...
Took advantage of the free travel for Seniors on the light rail & buses. About a 1km walk to the closest station. The light rail network is only 12 months old & further expansion is planned. Buses are what they call rapid services & everything runs on time or close to it.
The light rail trip to the CBD is around mins. We then took the bus to the Woden Westfield south of the CBD. It is strange ho Read on...
After one last night in the rubbish bed, its time to check out of the hotel Santa Fe, bringing the guest count to zero. My least favourite thing has been that they refused to provide room service ‘due to covid yet asked that we do not throw paper in the toilet. By now, the bin is overflowing with 4 days worth of soiled paper. At 6 am Ive had enough and go and sit outside until its time to leave. Read on...
After a great first week at RWO, I had an equally great weekend on safari. I went to Murchison Falls National Park which is to the north and the largest national park. The driver picked me at 7:00am in the morning and we started the drive north. This was the first time I had been too far outside of where I am staying. There are some highways, but also two lane roads which can be very congested whe Read on...
We were wrong in our last Blog when we said Hawker was the coldest place on Earth, Its not. Peterborough is!
Before we got away though, we had another drama. Monday night as we prepared the van for a morning departure Greg was ferrying items from the 4x4 and Joan was inside packing away, when Greg announced the door handle had broken off. Really! Lucky Joan was inside because there was no way we Read on...
We have been in a holding pattern at present here at Red Bay. Still waiting and hoping to get in soon at Bay Diesel for the second time. Otherwise, we will stay put until May 20th when we have a confirmed appointment. Pray that someone else cancels so we can get in early. Pray, Pray, Pray. Thank you.
Time to take you around the area. Thursday evening we went to Swamp Johns restaurant for their fi Read on...
I had to reach over somebodys fence to get this calm photo. There was no place to sit and absorb the beauty of the views here. Oia is a place in, get the photos and leave.
Took the bus to Oia this morning, seeking THAT photo of the three blue tops of churches. Yeah, I spent weeks working on a puzzle of Oia this winter. It had too many blue pieces, and after the town with its famous churches and Read on...
We spent a couple of weeks with our three youngsters in the relative warmth of North Queensland. First stop was Great Keppel Island off the coast of Yeppoon. We landed at Rockhampton, and nervously boarded a small six seater aircraft for the short flight out to the island. Eight year old Scott was then very much into anything airborne, and had been salivating for several weeks at the thought of a Read on...
I cant say I have been to many remote places in the world. They may have seemed remote, like the Atacama, Siberia, or the Arctic Circle. But check this out! Looking to really get off the grid? to Point Nemo, which gives a whole new meaning to the term middle of nowhere. Officially known as the the oceanic pole of inaccessibility, Point Nemo is the oceanic point that is the farthest from any shore Read on...
