Dunkirk is our last night on this leg of our Europe trip. Tomorrow morning we are on the Eurotunnel back to England.
After Chartres we spent a night in Paris with a friend of Js which was excellent. We had plenty of time so took a leisurely drive in to Paris and lunched on the way at Fontainebleau chateau. We devised a plan to park the car out of Paris near a station to avoid the Paris low emission zone. Like London the zone is large and the rules so we decided to stay safe and park by an station to CDG airport. Our plan worked well as we found a space only 200m from a RER station from which it was only 5 stops to Gare du Nord where we changed to the Metro for a short ride East.
From Paris it was a simple drive up the Autoroute to Dunkirk with a short detour into Lille to see where J stayed on her French exchange trip sometime in the 1970s. Dunkirk has an excellent museum about Operation Dynamo, the British WW2 evacuation. Afterwards it is just a short walk up to the beach
This trip has been excellent. Its been a long time since we travelled much in Europe and a slow road trip in the Summer is a great way to experience some of the very best of Europe. Now were back to England for a couple of weeks but then plan to do another, shorter road trip but this time heading North.
