Have you noticed if you are British that Professor Van Tam has disappeared? It seems and I could be wrong that if you disagree with Boris about Dominic Cummins you disappear . Not literally wiped off the face of the earth or dumped in the River Thames but you disappear quietly into the background never to be seen again . So what has happened to him I wondered as I woke up this fine miserable Thursday morning ? . No sun shining through the window . The promised better weather on the way was nowhere to be seen. Mist clung to everything . To the trees . In the grass . It did not feel like summer at all. Not the sort of day you want to get from under the bedclothes . If it had not been another work day perhaps I would have had a duvet day. But I had to get up and make a move . There was a walk to be done and then work . It would not wait .
Opening the curtains it was grey. The sun was somewhere else and despite everything the weather men told us that summer would return
I was not believing a word they said .We had been promised that towards the weekend things would improve. Looking out I could hardly credit how awful it looked . To make it worse I had no idea where to walk . Fields were out as the grass would be too wet . It had to be pavements which meant houses which meant people . And then there was my toe. It had been rubbing on the side of my shoe and was sore . All that walking 82 walks if you count the extras in the afternoon were taking their toll on my poor toe. When I get home I thought I must sort them out and order a new pair of shoes . I will have to hobble today and see how far I get .
I put my coat on to walk but that soon came off . It is sultry . The sort of weather were you feel you need a wet coat in case it rains but that coat is too hot to walk in. It ended up around my waist before I got too far . Up Central Drive I saw .
The weather was obviously putting folks off. Not a dog walker . Not a runner or jogger . Just me and a squirrel and a Thrush singing away and cracking snail shells . Just the rain dripping off the trees . It was not raining . This was the wet that had been sitting on the leaves waiting for me to pass under them.
Down Longedge Lane - more gardens - less people . As my toe ached my mind wandered off . What would today bring? Did Boris get lockdown right ? Was it too early ? Too late . So many opinions .
As I walked with my toe hurting I bounced ideas across my brain . One side fielding the thought or the question and the other responding . Did we lock down too early? No we probably did it too late . Would it have made any difference ? Who knows . Will we get the review of best practice ? Fudged no doubt . Will Boris review care homes ? Will he care enough? What about ethnicity - it plays a bit part in the deaths ? Yes I know but .................Will we ever get answers ?
I walked on heading home . STill me and my thoughts muddled as they were . 82 days of walking . 82 x 3 = 246 miles covered and I had not got out of Wingerworth. I needed the weighing scales . On one side 82 days of lockdown . On the other 83 days . That is what is left before we have yet another cancelled holiday. With a heavy heart I headed home .
So what are we to think of the missing Prof Van Tam . When the story of Dom Cummins hit the fan the medical officers were asked what they thought about this trip . Bojo answered for them My medical officers will not be drawn into politics and they were promptly gagged. Van Tam on the other hand answered the question clearly In my opinion the rules are there for a reason . In my opinion the rules are there for everyone and in my opinion everyone should abide by the rules And that was the last we saw of him. So I ask what has happened to him . No doubt we will find out at some point .
