While Karen and I packed the coolers and cleaned up after breakfast, the guys went for a quick fish in the river. On the of Miss Elaine, We were heading up the Au Sable River to Lake Placid.
The Ausable River, also known as AuSable River and originally written as Au Sable, runs in the U.S. state of New York, from the Adirondack Mountains and past the village of Lake Placid and Au Sable Forks to empty into Lake Champlain. It has an East and West branch that join at Au Sable Forks. That is exactly where our house was located.
As we drove up the Au Sable toward Lake placid we kept wondering where the attendees of the 84 Olympics spent the night. Its fairly rural and were limited. Miss Elaine worked in Lake placid at the time. She said it was crazy good then!
Driving along, we came upon a ski lodge and mountain. You could see the slopes high on the mountain. As we neared the entrance we could see references to the Olympics. There were still signs directing you to particular areas or events. At the entrance to the ski slopes there
We drove on toward Lake Placid. The GPS routed us through a private residential area with very narrow, poorly cared for roads. We finally gave up and rerouted ourselves to a better road. We found the town and started looking around. It was surprisingly busy for a Sunday morning! We found a place to park, got out of the car and walked around the town. Of course we shopped, snacked, and struck up conversations with strangers!
Once we left the downtown area of Lake Placid, we drove around before heading on to our next place to stay. The Von Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, VT. Visiting the Von Trapp Lodge has been on my bucket list for years!! We drove north toward the Canadian border to cross Lake Champlain by bridge instead of by ferry. We found a cute little town just inside Vermont where we stopped for our picnic lunch.
Back on the road again, we started looking for covered bridges. We saw a sign that said Montgomery county, covered hearts. We did see a few covered bridges but not too many, although it was a pretty drive.
When we arrived at the lodge, Ed was a little worried. I told him that in order to stay here (Von Trapp Family Lodge), you had to watch the Sound of Music!! It was an orientation!! Funny thing is, they did show a movie every night. Tonights movie was Singing in the Rain. Karen and I were the only people watching the movie so we tried to get them to show Sound of Music but believe it or not, their DVD of that movie wouldnt read! It worked our just fine. The guys enjoyed watching football while we watched Singing In The Rain!
We walked up the road to see the Scottish Highland Cows (highland coos or Cooley cows). We looked all over Scotland for these cows and only saw a couple. Here, in Vermont, was a whole herd!! They were fairly tame. One guy was feeding them apples and taking pictures.
The Von Trapp Family Lodge is run by Sam Von Trapp, grandson of Maria and Georg. It sits on 2500 acres overlooking Stowe, Vt. It is filled with family pictures and memorabilia. Its very hard to walk down the hallways without stopping to look at
