Today started out in Spearfish, SD and headed for Medora, ND. North Dakota is one of the 6 states Ive never visited. Medora is a small little town that you probably have never heard of. It is one of the entrances to Theodore Roosevelt National
Park. I discovered it by watching travel shows and quickly became interested in their outdoor show called the Medora Musical.
While driving through northern South Dakota, Terry said it was the most boring drive ever! Miles and miles of nothing.no homes, no towns, no businesses, NOTHING!!! Whos taking care of all the cows and crops? We didnt see even one farmer!
Once we crossed the border into North Dakota we began to see houses, gas stations, farm buildings, and farmers. We started seeing more rock formations and buttes.
As we neared our destination, we saw a sign for Painted Canyon. Now two years ago we visited the Peterified Forrest and the Painted Desert and Terry hated them both. Karen jokingly said, There, Terry its your Painted Canyon. He thought she wanted him to pull off and we are so glad he did. It was beautiful! The colors werent as bright as they could be
We traveled a few more miles and made it to Medora. First up was a drive through Theodore Roosevelt National Park. We had heard there has been sightings of bison, wild horses, prairie dogs, and mule deer. Trust me it wasnt hard to find the Prairie dogs, they were everywhere. They even came up to your car hoping for a handout. It made for a couple of great pictures!!
It took us a while to find a herd of bison but we did. They were pretty close to the road and really seemed not to notice us. No mule deer around. They must have been hiding. Finally we found the wild horses! They were kinda of hiding down in a ravine, but I spotted them.
Once we returned to Medora it was time to walk around the town and do some shopping. There are many shops in Medora, just like any other vacation town. We bought sweatshirts, magnets, and chocolate covered nuts. It was nice to walk around the town and visit with the people.
dinner reservations at the Pitchfork Steak Fondue. You might wonder just what that is..its a steak deep fried on the ends of a pitchfork. I tell you that is one of the best steaks Ive ever eaten! It with baked potato, baked beans, cole slaw, veggies, fruit, garlic toast, brownies or mini donuts, and lemonade or water. It was on the hillside overlooking Medora and near the hillside venue for the outdoor musical.
Following our meal we got in line for the musical. We loved that there were escalators going down the hill that turned around and took you back up at the end of the show. The musical is a history of Medora, Teddy Roosevelt, and the west. The performers were from all over the US and from as close to us as Columbus, Ohio. They were outstanding!! They also had special guests from Chicago called the Chicago Boyz Acrobatic team. My goodness they were outstanding!!
Our hotel for the night was in Glendive, Montana which was about an hour west. We were tired and hit the hay soon after we arrived.
