The trip from Mammoth Lake to Death Valley was only 3.5 hours so we werent in any real hurry. We always love the scenery when we are driving and are often in awe that its a story of two side of the road. It seems there can be a vast difference between the left side and right side of the vehicle.
We made a stop in Lone Pine, CA tongas up (cheaper prices). As we continued on I spied a museum of western film history and had Terry turn around so we could stop there. We are all so glad we did. It was in an old movie theater, but was so well done. They had memorabilia from the many movies that were filmed in Lone Pine and the surrounding Alabama Hills. They even showed a short film about the history of the filming there. We loved our stop there
Next up was the Eastern Sierra InterAgency Visitor Center right where you turn off to go to Death Valley. We love stopping at these visitors centers as you can obtain so Much info Just talking to People let alone picking up travel brochures.
book at these places and today was no different. Ed signed his and Karens names first. He immediately hit Karen to take a look at what he saw. They came and got me to take a look. Just a few lines above our signatures was the signature of John and Jennifer Trunk, Belmont, WV (Good friends from Our home town)!!! They had signed just the day before we signed.
Idea they were in the same place we were. We took a picture of the guest book and sent it to them in a text. Once they responded we discovered we all had toured Death Valley at the same time! What a coincidence! We spent the night in Death Valley and they spent the night about an hour away in Parump, NV. We planned on having breakfast the next morning in Parump as it was on our way to Kanab, Utah. A phone call later and we were meeting them for breakfast the next day! We just couldnt get over the fact that we were meeting up with someone from home.totally unplanned!
sites to see in Death Valley. It was nothing like I expected. I thought it would be a lot of flat Sandy wasteland, but it wasnt. Youll have to take a close look at the pictures. Some of the places we stopped were Father John Crowleys Point, Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, Harmony Borax Works, Bad Water Basin, and Artists Drive.
The one place Terry didnt want to go on this trip was Death Valley. He hates hot weather and he did NOT want to be here. He actually didnt get out of the car much. He said hes look at the pictures. It did get warmthe hottest temperature was 111 degrees!
Our hotel for the night was the Oasis at Death Valley. It has been in Death Valley for years but was recently sold and the new owners are trying to modernize and remodel. We had dinner at the saloon, shopped at the general store, and visited the Borax museum.
I grew up watching westerns and cop shows. We watched Death Valley Days and their sponsor was 20 Mule Team Borax. I never knew until a few months ago that the borax was mined in Death Valley
and pulled out by a team of 20 miles and 2 horses. Many of the wagons and pieces of equipment used to work the mine were outside of the museum. It was amazing just how big Some of the equipment was, especially the wheels!
