We made it to Germany on Monday after several flights, but we were glad to be here. We didnt sleep much. On the long flight, right as we both were falling asleep, the flight attendant made an announcement. This is important, you must listen or something like that but in the tone of something major has happened to the plane. She then started again and again said whatever it was in the tone followed by, you need to fill this paperwork in before arriving in France. What, ok, but did you have to say it in that tone? Can you say adrenaline rush? Well, that is what we heard and then we couldnt relax enough to fall asleep. Dennis picked us up at the airport and drove us back to his house. We arrived and got to meet the kids, Emil (2.5) and Ida June (7 months). We spent the day talking and walking around the neighborhood. His parents invited us all over for a wonderful dinner. It was a soup with Susans favorite carrot and apple salad on the side. It was such fun seeing them again. a small town, Soltau. It had a nice pedestrian area to walk around and a small park where Emil could play a bit. After the park, Vini took the kids home and we headed to POW and concentration camp museum. This is the concentration camp where Anne Frank died. She was sent here after Auschwitz. They had taped interviews with survivors who knew her and Margaret. The museum is located on the site where the camp was. School children in the area have field trips to the museum. They do not try to hide their history. Dennis, Susan and I then went to dinner at an Italian restaurant if the city next to Dorfmark. Today we drove to Bremen. We visited the market square where we saw the city mascot. A donkey with a dog on its back with a cat on the dogs back and a rooster on the cats back. We went into a few shops along the Bttcherstrae and then over to Schnoor area with very old houses and shops. We ate at a local caf where Emil got to help the worker do a bit of his job by putting stickers on the packages. The food was great and watching the kids was fun. We finished the day by walking to the river and letting Emil tour the pirate ship restaurant. They are preparing for the Christmas market that opens next week. We could see all the stalls but no, it wasnt open. We do hope to visit a market that is open, tomorrow. As we walked back to the car (it was dark), we saw the market area with the lights. It was beautiful. We ended the night in the man cave trying 3 different whiskeys in Denniss collection. There must be 50 different types. We also had a lot of potato chips. There is a reason I dont buy the chips because I cant stop eating them. The kids were in bed so we spent time talking and remembering times when Dennis was in the states or when we were visiting here in Dorfmark.
