Our next overnight stop was a small out of town aire in the tiny village of Bram . It was a decent site with automatic barries , a dump, free water, a fishing lake and was very quiet . We shared our night stop with two others. It had no infrastructure to speak of and we were only using it as a nightstop.
Leaving the site we headed off to the town of Elne or Elna depending if you used French or th Read on...
It was a pretty uneventful day when to travel. I had a 6.5 hour flight to Amsterdam, a 2 hour lay over and then a 7.5 hour flight to Rwanda. When I arrived in Rwanda I stayed on the plane while other passengers got off and on the plane. Then it was just a short 30 min flight into Entebbe, Uganda.
Upon arrival there was the normal customs and immigration as well as an additional PCR test requireme Read on...
I woke early and used the quiet morning stillness to proofread and edit a quotation request wed received hours before leaving Australia, and one that I so desperately wanted to finish.
We left our hotel (the People Place Hotel) at 8:30am in search of a breakfast caf that had been in our Lonely Planet guide, but alas, couldnt find it. We received some very helpful directions from a young local bo Read on...
This morning is our first full day in Costa Rica. I am awake at 5 am (which is actually 11 in the UK and my stomach). 2 hours till breakfast and Im starving.
At 6 it gets light and I can brave going outside to sit in the garden without standing in anything. Its a pretty little garden with a gazebo and plunge pool set among the shrubs.
Breakfast is served in a clearing in the garden and is very t Read on...
Yesterday was mostly a driving day from Manapouri to Arrowtown so not too much to report other than we stopped at Te Anau for an hours walk on the lake front and also at Kingston to check it out at the foot of Lake Wakatipu. We are now based at Settlers Cottage Motel for most of the next week. We chose this place as its the least like a motel and more like a homely cottage which it is. A good choi Read on...
Weve got some time to kill so we visit Broomes Japanese and Chinese cemeteries. These were originally deliberately located outside the town boundary, probably for some obscure reason related to our racist past. Thankfully the town boundary was subsequently moved, so theyre now well inside. The Chinese section is a bit underwhelming and not particularly well maintained. I wonder if Premier Xi knows Read on...
Sunday: A nice exploration and flat hike at crooked river state park. Probably the most confusing signs for their trails- I made accidental loops and got lost 3 times. How did I realize I was lost? I ended up back in the parking lot... 3 times!!! It was a cold but sunny day. In the evening I headed down to Jacksonville for a quick visit with my sister Denise.
Tuesday: Nighttime walk on the beach. Read on...
Having spent the morning exploring Bangkoks khlongs (canals) in a long wooden boat and ambling through the serene but crowded Wat Pho we returned to Siam Unique Hotel to prepare for our overnight train to Chiang Mai. We settled on thick wooden chairs in hotel alcove and worked on our travel notes, only venturing into the searing afternoon heat to pick up some snacks from a nearby store. It was a Read on...
William took us to a different drop off point than yesterday and directed us over a footbridge, which was actually a stone bridge used by students. This pix was available at the beginning of the footbridge of the high elevation of the cathedral. BTW, this University is quite prestigious, entry difficult, with students from 120 countries.
Thought we Durham until breakfast when fellow inn mates (ac Read on...
Santorini is one of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea. It was devastated by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century BC, forever shaping its rugged landscape. The whitewashed, cubiform houses of its 2 principal towns, Fira and Oia, cling to cliffs above an underwater caldera.
Great poets have sung its praises, a 4.000 year old history. The eternal rock continues to stand, strong and majestic Read on...
