Following on from my previous theme of walks around Cairns, I decided to return to one local to me called Earl Hill. This was a track I had used many years ago when training to tackle the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea. At that time, the track was quite steep, with high step ups, which I needed to train for Kokoda. I would go up and down it about 3 times, with my back pack, to strenghten my legs Read on...
Slept in even a bit more than yesterday, breakfast at 9:30 at the hotel then off for a day in the Mountains. We covered a lot of ground today, 175 miles in the car, and 3 miles on foot. The Jmez mountain trail is just northwest of Santa Fe. It is a circular route that takes you through the Bandelier National Monument, Caldera National Preserve, the Jmez National Forest and Jmez Indian Reservation Read on...
Before sunrise, we found ourselves again climbing into open air vehicles for our day of game drives in Kruger National Park. Again facing very cold temperatures, these vehicles were equipped with nice blankets that I wrapped around myself a la Indian style. It never occurred to me to bring a heavier coat other than a windbreaker, which was not enough in the midst of a cold front. Kruger National Read on...
The trip was planned last October with the idea of getting away for Steve and Torys anniversary with no kids. We wanted to go somewhere similar to our Honeymoon in Costa Rica, which was 10 amazing days spent between Tamarindo Beach and Nayara at the Arenal Volcano. Panama was an option but Cancun was by our travel agent Debbie and the Haven Riviera resort was the place. We started the night bef Read on...
Another decent walk today - I actually merged two walks from Castleton together (to make FrankenWalk!) Our trip was almost sabotaged by a collapsed dry stone wall partially blocking the track, but we cleared the stones out of the way then called our landlord to see if they could contact the farmer to make sure the cattle in the field didnt escape through the broken wall. We set off from Castleto Read on...
We had passes to the Tower with an entry of 10 am. We have walked there before but this time we took the tube, a quick ride to Tower Hill where people were executed back in the day. I wanted Zaya to see King Henry VIIIs armor and where the kings and queens lived. We checked out the Crown Jewels first, which are always impressive. Crowns so large and heavy as to make a person lose inches in height Read on...
We left Auckland on the 11th October. Drove out to Kumeu for the cheapest fuel weve had in months then on up Highway 16 through Helensville, a place we hadnt been to before. This road was new to us. We stopped at the Kaipara Garden and Sculpture Park. It was worth the stop. The garden centre was attractive and quirky but the sculpture park attached to it was a delight. We bought tickets and wander Read on...
This afternoon I took the bus to Akrotiri to see the archeological site of town that was destroyed by volcanic explosion nearly 4,000 years ago, but survived enough to be dug up now. I took photos of the landscape so you can see the height of the ash and pyroclastic fallout from that explosion. Lucky for us, there was a water way that, over time, eroded and exposed this town. Im going to upload t Read on...
Not quite as windy as yesterday but not far off. Colder and a few hail showers too. From Four Lane Ends to Pendleton, then Wiswell, Whalley, Mitton, TT triangle, Waddington, West Bradford, Chatburn, Worston and back to Four Lane Ends. Our virtual journey would be leaving Thoissey to continue south on the banks of the Saone passing more and grand Chateau until we arrive in the small town of Ville Read on...
