The train arrived in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg at 1552. By the time I arrived at the hotel, there was little time for anything besides a short walk and a bite to eat; however, as I was settling into my room, I heard patriotic music from the street below. Stepping onto the balcony, I saw several folks involved in some kind of ceremony across the street from the hotel at what I later learned is the Monument of Remembrance. I asked the clerk on my way out to dinner if the ceremony had anything to do with Frances Bastille Day Celebration and if the predominant language in Luxembourg was French. He confirmed both of my suspicions. – Three Nights – Grand Hotel Cravat – Luxembourg City, Luxembourg
FRI, 15 JUL 2022 TOURISM: I had nothing in particular on the agenda for either Luxembourg in general nor for Luxembourg City specifically. From the overlook near the Monument of Remembrance, I had seen there was an old town way down in the arroyo that was much too deep for Uncle Larrys leathery lungs to challenge. So, Friday was limited to several short walks radiating from the hotel. Of course, there
were the customary breaks for a coffee, a beer or a glass of wine as the time of day and the taste buds dictated.
SAT, 16 JUL 2022 TOURISM: I set out in the morning for another of those nondescript neighborhood strolls and happened upon the Ptrusse Express, a cute little wheeled train of sorts that takes the passenger on a survey of the old city, including that portion way down in the arroyo and far beyond the capacity of Uncle Larrys stamina or desire, along with a narrative (in any of six languages) outlining the history of Luxembourg. Money well spent. After lunch, I used the city buses to do some sightseeing beyond the hotels zip code. What the heck? All domestic public transportation in Luxembourg, including buses, trams, light rail and funicular, is free to reduce pollution and traffic congestion. Oh, yes, the funicular. I asked three different people which bus line to take to access the funicular – the hotel desk clerk, the attendant at the visitors center and a bus driver – and got three different answers. Roll with the flow, Uncle Larry. If its that obscure, it probably isnt that spectacular!
SUN, 17 JUL 2022A PREPARE FOR THE MOVE TO BRUGES, BELGIUM: I had no real preconceived notions about Luxembourg so there was no jubilation nor disappointment. Luxembourg City, just across the border from France, is the only portion I have seen thus far. The city is clean, and the people are friendly. The customs and the predominant language are, well, very French!
