Set off early to get to our next destination as it was a 3 hour drive. We said out goodbyes to the hosts and German guests and hit the road. The drive started out the same as it had been on all our other trips, on the wide open super nice toll roads, hearing the beep of a fare every so often. $0.60 here, $0.50 there... Beep. It then turned into a drive through the Portuguese country side on smaller country roads winding and twisting through small towns and in between grape fields and some other trees we couldnt recognize. I think it might have been olive trees. Definitely agriculture area. The roads were fun to drive but would have been better with a good car , i.e. one with more than 75hp. It struggles up the hills. The land was much more dry in this region. We arrived at our airbnb and unpacked and gave the weather a bit of time to cool off. It was 40 degrees in the sun and its very hot. We eventually headed into central Evora and looked at the Cathedral of bones. The monks dug up the bodies from the cemetery and used their bones amd skulls to decorate the walls. So odd. Such a strange thing to do, especially from people of the church, even if they were running out of space in the cemetery. The rest of the chapel wasnt that impressive. We went next door to the san Fransisco church and that was pretty impressive. Huge tall vaulted ceilings and lots of ornate work on the walls. The kids lit candles for some relatives and we moved on. We tried to find the Roman house ruins and must have walked by it 2 times before we finally realized what it was. It was a roman house but it had been covered by exterior walls and you had to look at it through windows. Hard to see and very disappointing. We jumped back in the car and drove to the Roman temple which they think was built in 100AD, still partially standing. I think we finally pushed the kids to the limit today. They were up late and had to get up early to get to the new place and they were both not interested in walking around or seeing anything. The heat didnt help but they just wanted to go back to the airbnb and relax. So, thats what we did. We grabbed some food and went back to eat and relax. Tomorrow we leave for the beaches in the south. It will actually be cooler by 10 degrees, who figured. We are all looking forward to relaxing a bit more, less history and sights to see. It will be a nice say to end the trip.
