Today was planned to be a day of leisure as we seem to have been dashing somewhere every day so far. A shower, leisurely breakfast, stroll along the fields beyond the campsite and maybe a coffee in Churwalden village. It rained, as forecast, in the night and the campsite looked rather spectacular when we woke with lumps of white cloud hanging around over everything. It did rather reinforce the idea that the weather really was changing as rain was forecast and rain it did.
Sometimes we change our plans. I had been checking the weather and though I knew we were expecting rain and possible thunderstorms in the next couple of days, Snow was not on my agenda. For one thing I havent brought my boots nor any trousers. Silly maybe as we are in the Swiss mountains but as far as Im concerned we are still enjoying summer. Certainly the suntan acquired in the last few days would suggest that.
Snow though was what the forecast said and believe me I tried three different apps in the hope of finding a better.
discussion in English than if he were Swiss. He said snow was definitely forecast for late Friday, early Saturday. We have tickets booked for the train to St Moritz Friday and then need to move on to Montreux on Saturday. This means we need to stay put But if we stay that then means driving down the wibbly wobbly multiple hair pin steep road to Chur on Saturday morning in the motorhome with the Smart Car behind on quite possibly a snow covered road. EEEK. Campsite man said the first snow of the season is the worst as nobody has their snow tyres on. Making me feel quite nervous really.
Bob had a brain wave. We know there is another campsite, in Chur because we stayed there in June 2018 but didnt like it as full of really scruffy permanents and also really noisy next to the motorway and an industrial estate. If though we went down there today we would not need to go down to Chur and back in the Smart Car on Friday for the St Moritz train and we would not need to risk going down in snow on Saturday in the motorhome.
I phoned ahead first to Montreux to ask if we could arrive on Saturday rather than Sunday. We had originally planned to take a mountainous route staying at Brig en route and using a train to bypass one of the passes we are not allowed to use with the car as a trailer. Have already decided to use the motorways back the way we came here instead of the mountains and the prospect of snow reinforces that decision. All good. Montreux is now a positive for Saturday.
So Bob did what Bob does before we set off, emptying and filling and checking tyres. I paid for the 4 nights on our lovely campsite and promised to return.
Then Smart Arse reattached to the back we went down the wibbly wobbly road but it was dry and no snow so not a problem and we checked in at the site at the bottom of the mountain well away from any mountain snow.
Site Camping au Chur is as we remembered it. Stlll exceedingly scruffy and road noisy but the sanitaires
are fine, it has a little bar and shop. Sadly no longer Acsi (so have to pay full price) but not surprised as really too scruffy to pass inspection for ACSI approval. We went down to the river which runs just behind the site, the Rhine or Rhein as spelt here. We were here last on 17th June our wedding anniversary in 2018 and had taken a selfie photo by the river which is one of my favourites. So of course we have now taken another. Back to the bar for a drink which was nicely timed as started to rain shortly afterwards and looks to be set in for the night.
