Another decent morning weatherwise. Our loop was through Chatburn to Sawley, Bolton by Bowland and round the radio mast and home via Sawley and Chatburn.
Our virtual journey would be leaving Pierrelatte, still on the ViaRhona, and staying close to the River Rhone. Soon after leaving Pierrelatte we pass through Bollene. We stayed here in 2009 in a hotel on the edge of town. We walked into town in the evening for food and found that everywhere was closed except for in the main town square which was exceptionally busy. We found a restaurant that had two free seats and found there were only about three choices on the menu but one choice was Chilli con carne so we that was fine by us. We were then treated to a free classical concert as we sat and ate our meal.
Orange is another Roman City, which has two ancient monuments that are UNESCO World Heritage Sites: its ancient theatre and its triumphal arch. The Roman theatre was built at the beginning of 1st century, during the reign of Caesar Augustus and boasts a superbly stage wall. The city is also famous for its operatic music festival, the Chorgies dOrange, which takes place in the ancient theatre. Completely unbeknownst to us the night we stayed in Orange, in August 2009, was the evening the Chorgies dOrange took place so the city was very busy that evening and it took us a while to find somewhere with a free table to dine at.
Photos show the Bollene concert in 2009, 2009, the Arc de Triumph, Orange 2009, two photos of the Theatre Antique dOrange and Orange hotel de ville.
We are now five weeks into our challenge and well on target to achieve the set mileage. 854 miles completed
