We decided to take the motorhome out for a few days to check everything was working okay before we ventured overseas to meet up with over 40 Carthago motorhome owners in Denmark.
So yesterday we arrive at a nice quiet site called River Breamish which is near Alnwick. Well when I asked where the site was Mike insisted it was in Beamish and we could visit the Beamish museum, so as you can tell mine and Mikes sense of direction leave much to be desired.
Up relatively early as we have had a few really early mornings recently with me doing a 2am - 6am shift at Samaritans and then some late night zoom calls on strategy and then to cap it all an early start at Garth Prison (as a Samaritans and not an I must add).
We decide that today we would do a 10km circular walk from the site incorporating the Ingram Cafe. So off we pop with a nice walk around the lake with lots of birds and hives to watch the birds. So I go into one and see some Canada Geese (keep this in mind for later on). I see some
lovely mountains (well hills) with some bluebells or so I thought (again hold this thought). We manage quite well to find the cafe and have a bite to eat - really nice food if I am honest.
Now the fun starts..we follow the map and the instructions or so we thought and it says follow the footpath through the bracken with a gentle incline. All I can say is I am following Mike and when you need crampons, pick axe and rope with carabiners I think this does not mean gentle incline. I inform Mike who thinks he is Sir Edmund Hillary by this stage - also, yes they were bluebells as this time I am in the middle of them. Down the bottom they looked pretty up here I am deciding if we get stranded can you eat bluebells!!!!!! and do Canada Geese fly up mountains and I wonder if they taste like duck! Now I am thinking Canada Geese with a bluebell sauce - looking like I am the next Masterchef on the invention test!
Anyway I decide to stand my ground and say NOOOOOOO we need to go back down. Its easier to go up than down especially at our age with dodgy knees but we make it.
So you think we have learned our lesson, well no as once again we get lost this time we up to our arm pits in grass as once again we lose the path - this time I remember the warning sign in the information part of the campsite saying beware of adders in the grass as they are prevalent in this area. So not only have I been subjected to altitude sickness now I am subjected to snake bites - will I make it to Denmark, not sure about that. We are supposed to be off to Alnwick tomorrow in the Motorhome so nothing can go wrong there surely - watch this space!!!!
