We got up early this morning, especially early since my (Susan) breakfast was delivered 45 minutes early and I was still in bed. We left to visit Schwerin Castle, one of the most beautiful castles in Europe. It took about 1.5 hours on the bus to get there, but we considered ourselves lucky. Those who were going to spend the day in Berlin had to leave at the crack of dawn and were on a train 3.5 ho Read on...
Todays route was round the radio mast with an extra loop of Long Bank Lane included. Out through Chatburn, Sawley and Bolton by Bowland and home via Sawley and Chatburn. It was nice on the way out but into a very cold headwind on the way home. We chose this loop as we might see people we know. Deborah Armstrong gave us a cheery beep on Sawley Brow and we had a few minutes talking to Alan Taylor an Read on...
After finishing the Milford Track, I overnighted at Te Anau, before been picked up by the Ultimate Hikes coach to take us to the start of the Routeburn Track. The Routeburn Track is only a 3 day and 2 night trek, covering just over 32 kms. The start of the walk was up hill and after about an hour we came to Key Summit. This gave you some great views over the lake and towards the mountains. The tr Read on...

So instead of saying Rushmore to Murchison to Shepparton, its Rushy to Murchy to Shepp. There was no real hurry today as we were only planning on about 55kms. Having said that Felice said up for a Sunday drive and meet us at Murchy for a coffee at about 10am. We bid farewell to Rushy with a slight detour to see a block of land Jeffs brot Read on...

Today I put myself in that classic postcard view. I took the bus to Fira and walked over to the caldera view. OMG Stunning! I just had to have an expensive coffee on the edge of an expensive restaurant balcony. Then I ordered a Greek salad, to extend the stay, though the waitresses were uber friendly and would have let me stay. There were people waiting for these premier tables. It is surreal, sit Read on...
Think has published a great article about rhetoric from the Orange Man, and others. Here are some excerpts. It makes me sad, since my parents and grandparents went through Relocation and incarceration (see tar paper barracks above) after Pearl Harbor. I often try to imagine how they felt, particularly when my Uncles (one pictured above) were drafted into the Army, to fight the very country from w Read on...
I visited Nikolskaya Street with Anna a couple of weeks back and this afternoon I was pleased to revisit to see all the beautiful illuminations which were introduced during the FIFA world club and are now a permanent feature. It was good to hear again all about the historic buildings, the Old Mint, the First printer & publishers, the Greek Monastery of St. Nicholas and the famous Ferrein pharmacy Read on...
Rather than explore all of the wines and regions of Portugal, I will focus on the Douro Valley, home of the most famous Portuguese wine, port, and more recently some enticing red wines. In fact, my trip up to Porto from Lisob is designed to do just that. Focus on ports and red wine. Do not be alarmed if you know very little or nothing about Portuguese wine. I was the same way back in 2001 on my fi Read on...
This morning started with the ship slowly cruising into Sitka, Alaska and it was overcast and dreary looking but as we got closer and closer to the pier, the clouds lifted and it was a nice day overall. Clear (no sun) and 54 degrees was the high today according to our TV. We walked off the ship and took the free shuttle to downtown Sitka. From there, we walked about 20 minutes to the Sitka Nationa Read on...
